Raw Agates and Geodes from Mexico, 1 kg – Las Choyas, 1970s – Lapidary

AgatyWyprawy.pl

Unique, archival material for cutting and polishing—1 kg of raw, whole geode and agate nodules from the legendary Las Choyas site in Mexico, mined in the 1970s during the so-called “golden age” of this deposit. Unlike material from modern mines, this older material is more likely to contain beautiful crystal-filled voids, smoky quartz, amethyst, and classic agate bands. The completely unpredictable interiors enclosed within perfect, spherical forms provide incredible excitement and fun when cutting them open yourself. Due to the raw nature of the material, there are also some lower-quality pieces; the interior is unpredictable. This offer is for a 1-kg set of unopened, whole buns.

An extraordinary thrill and a great adventure when cutting them open

Opening geodes from Las Choyas is an unforgettable experience for every mineral enthusiast. From the outside, all the geodes look nearly identical, but what lies inside remains a complete surprise until the moment you cut them open. This material is characterized by incredible diversity—you may find deep cavities lined with sparkling quartz crystals, beautiful purple amethyst clusters, rare smoky quartz, and multicolored, dense chalcedony bands. Keep in mind that, as with any natural raw material, there are also solid (unveined) specimens, less attractive ones, or those with less crystallization.

Why does the historic Las Choyas mine outperform modern mining operations?

The Las Choyas deposit in Mexico is considered one of the most important sources of geodes in the world. However, there is a fundamental difference between specimens mined several decades ago and those extracted today. Currently, mining operations are conducted at depths exceeding 50 meters underground. To break through such hard layers of volcanic rock, miners commonly use dynamite, which often causes microcracks to form inside the geodes and frequently leads to their damage even before they are extracted. Furthermore, today’s excavated material consists mostly of ordinary, compacted quartz. The material we offer comes from shallow, more diverse sections of the deposit, thanks to which it features a significantly higher proportion of agates and geodes with beautiful, intact crystalline cavities and a healthy, undamaged outer shell.
