Characteristics of Patagonian Agates
The main feature of agates from this region is their unpredictable coloration. Since most of the nodules are nearly perfect spheres, the outer shell does not reveal the secret of the interior—the full spectrum of colors and patterns is only revealed once they are cut open.
A major advantage is the material’s compactness. These agates very rarely have internal cracks, so they practically never fracture during cutting, and the resulting patterns are clean and intact. There are also no weathered or hollow specimens. The worst-case scenario is pieces filled with pure quartz, which are occasionally found here.
