Due to the alluvial nature of the deposit, the material consists of smaller, very manageable nuggets—on average, there are 5 to 10 agates per kilogram, which provides a substantial amount to cut.

River Pebbles from Sumatra – A Geologist’s Box of Surprises

Agates found in the riverbeds of Sumatra are among the most exciting stones for DIY processing. River water acts as a natural grinding drum—over the centuries, it has worn down and selected the hardest, most silica-rich fragments, eliminating the surrounding soft rock. The outer, unassuming, and smooth surface of these river pebbles perfectly conceals what lies within. River agates from this region are famous for the incredible surprises they reveal when cut open. Inside, you can discover both classic, concentric agate bands and fanciful moss-like patterns, jasper inclusions, and crystalline geodes filled with fine quartz.

The photos presented in the gallery are for illustrative purposes only and show examples of river agates from the same batch. Since each agate is a unique creation of nature, the final appearance of the interior after cutting remains unpredictable. Returns are not accepted after the stones have been mechanically damaged or cut open.
