Agates—their name derives from the river Achates, now known as the Dirillo in southern Sicily, where they were mined as far back as ancient times. It is a semi-precious mineral, a variety of chalcedony, formed into multicolored bands. It forms in rock cavities known as geodes. As a result of repeated processes of silica precipitation from solutions or the cyclic precipitation of pigment within a silica gel, multicolored alternating layers of highly varied hues are formed. Agates have a hardness of 6.5–7 on the 10-point Mohs scale. The specimen offered here was found in Poland.
